Tax incentives are attracting businesses and bringing jobs to the Greenwood, Mississippi, area. That’s good news for companies, but will result in a loss of more than $1.5 million a year because of the
property tax exemptions given by the city to business owners. The creation of new jobs is expected to help make up the revenue loss in Greenwood. Greenwood Leflore Industrial Board Executive Director Angela Curry says that economic development is competitive and that it’s almost necessary to offer companies some incentives. A Mississippi law allows
local government to grant businesses property exemptions for up to 10 years.
