The Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science, or CDU, has joined with a leading minority business advocacy organization to maximize opportunities for local minority businesses.
The Southern California Minority Business Development Council, or SCMBDC, serves more than 1,100 minority business enterprises and 200 corporate members throughout 13 counties.
The partnership will offer contracting and
construction work to local minority businesses when CDU breaks ground on two new buildings at its South Los Angeles campus.
“We have been committed to the South Los Angeles community for nearly 40 years,” said CDU president Susan Kelly, who pointed out that the school already uses minority- and female-owned businesses for its landscaping, electrical, and plumbing needs. “Now, we are seeking qualified, licensed local minority contractors for all phases of our building activities.”
The SCMBDC, founded in 1975 and based in Los Angeles, is one of almost 400 regional councils in the National Minority Supplier Development Council.
CDU is a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian, minority-serving medical and health sciences institution located in the Watts-Willowbrook area of South Los Angeles. It has graduated over 550
medical doctors, 2,500 post-graduate physicians, and more than 2,000 physician’s assistants.
